    Grainger & Allison's Diagnostic Radiology - A Textbook of Medical Imaging 5th Edition

    This 5th edition of Diagnostic Radiology continues to build on the original vision of Professors Grainger and Allison who, back in the early 1980s, saw the need for a ‘bible’ for doctors studying for postgraduate examinations in radiology, and to provide a bench book for reporting and reference. The success of the first four editions, which were extremely well received by an increasingly international readership, speaks for the realisation of their dream. Few could have predicted at that stage the extraordinary growth of radiology, or its increasing importance within all aspects of modern medicine. The unprecedented expansion in the imaging repertoire, together with the trend for increasing subspecialisation, have led to changes in training and in the methods used for teaching and learning. This book has had to evolve to reflect these changes, adapting to the perceived needs of those facing postgraduate examinations and also to all radiologists who wish to have an up-to-date basic general textbook for ready reference and illustration.
    An attempt to cover every subject in detail would have resulted in a huge book that would have been very difficult touse. This book concentrates on those subjects that most radiologists need to know well, and to pay special attention to the needs of trainee radiologists preparing for examinations. Because training throughout Europe is moving towards a three year basic course followed by two years of training in selected subspecialties, the factual examination in the UK has moved to an earlier stage in training with less emphasis on some of the diagnostic rarities so beloved by examiners of old. The curriculum is now somewhat less comprehensive and the reduction in size of this 5th Edition reflects that – down from three volumes to two. In this electronic age there are many databases of images available on the internet, with accompanying text. Nevertheless, well structured textbooks remain an essential part of medical education and practice as they present information in a format that facilitates learning, guiding the reader through an unfamiliar field. Diagnostic Radiology will remain a valuable resource for many years to come.

    Mettler: Essentials of Radiology 2nd Edition

    Radiology receives little attention in most medical school curricula except perhaps as an elective. This is astonishing given that the physician most commonly encounters human internal anatomy and function through radiology. Physicians must be well grounded in the essentials of imaging to properly care for their patients. Some authors have argued the need for “imaging literacy.” I hope this text can contribute to such a goal.
    With a basic text containing fundamentals, one might wonder why a second edition would be needed. Even though many aspects of radiology have remained unchanged over the last decade, rapid and significant changes have occurred in both technology and applications. Radiology over the last century relied predominantly on film as the image receptor. Now images are commonly obtained, interpreted, transmitted, and stored in digital format. As with digital cameras, film is becoming a thing of the past. These changes will not be immediately apparent to the reader of this text. Access to digital images is much more convenient. Chest x-rays often appear on computers in intensive care units and, to the great relief of medical students, interns, and residents, little time will be lost in tracking down films. Indeed, there is much less reason for a physician to visit the radiology department. In-person consultations with radiologists are becoming less frequent. Greater expertise in radiology will be required as medical students, residents, and others will be interpreting digital images at sites remote from the radiology department.
    Uses of computed tomography (CT) scanning have significantly expanded. CT scanners have evolved from single-slice, rather slow, machines to helical 16-slice scanners capable of imaging large portions of the body in a matter of a few seconds. Applications that previously could not be performed, because of patient or organ motion, now are no problem. In addition to procedures allowed by the new technology, much more clinical experience has been gained. CT scans have largely replaced intravenous pyelograms (IVPs) for evaluation of renal or ureteral stones, and CT has become a mainstay in the diagnosis of many abdominal, pelvic, and retroperitoneal pathologies (e.g., appendicitis). CT scans are rapidly replacing most plain films of the abdomen.
    In nuclear medicine, rapid growth has been seen in positron emission tomography (PET) scanning. The most common applications are for evaluation and staging of neoplasms. Even the boundary between radiology and nuclear medicine has become blurred with the advent of hybrid CT/PET scanners.
    The major changes to the second edition of Essentials of Radiology are an increased emphasis on CT scanning and PET imaging. Information has been added on the appropriate workup of common clinical problems such as headache, hypertension, and low back pain. I have endeavored to include this information without expanding the total volume of the text and yet retaining the essentials. Because readers often have questions about the cost and radiation dose associated with common examintations, this information has been retained in the appendix.
    This best-selling radiology primer clearly explains the basic principles and clinical applications of plain film, CT, MRI, and nuclear medicine.       In any radiology department worldwide, around 60–70% of investigations deal with surgical cases: trauma, tumors, pre- and postsurgical assessment, surgical follow-ups, and more. In spite of that, radiology has a lot to offer in the field of internal medicine in terms of establishing, confirming, or rejecting diagnoses, or favoring differential diagnoses.

      Before Dr. Jarrah Ali Al-Tubaikh joined radiology, he worked as an internal physician for almost a year and almost another year and half as a general surgeon. This clinical experience leads him to look at radiological images with the eye of a radiologist and the mind of a clinician when he examine patient radiological images. He even take a history and do a clinical examination if he have the chance when the patient is in the ultrasound, CT, or MRI room. He have always believed that the radiologist’s role is not confined to writing reports, but it can be broadened to establish the diagnosis in the first hand in the same way as the clinician do.

      In the medical library, there are books dedicated to the clinical signs of internal medicine diseases; interestingly, there are no such books in the radiology library. Radiology books concentrate on the radiological signs according to the system involved, not according to the disease or the specialty. For example, looking for signs of multiple myeloma follows the bone marrow tumors in a musculoskeletal radiology book, not a radiological book that discusses diseases of hematology, for example, which is the main target and idea of this book.

      This book is designed to put the radiologist in the internal physician’s shoes. It teaches radiologists how to think in terms of disease progression and complications, where to look for and to image these complications, and what are the best modalities used to reach a diagnosis. Also, the internal physicians can benefit from this book by learning what help radiology can offer them in establishing a diagnosis. The book also helps internal physicians to think like radiologists, in terms of what investigation they should request to confirm their diagnosis.

      Each disease is mentioned with its pathophysiology, symptoms, clinical presentation, and how radiology can be used to establish the diagnosis or to look for the complications of this particular disease. Specialties covered in this book include gastroenterology, neurology, endocrinology, nephrology, cardiology, rheumatology, pulmonology, dermatology, hematology, diabetology, and tropical and infectious medicine.

      The book works as a short textbook with an atlas of images. The book is not designed to serve as the only textbook for study. Doctors, or radiologists who are interested in more details about a certain disease, should refer to the standard medical or radiological textbooks.

      The book is not confined to medical diseases alone. Pediatrics, gynecology, genetics, and some surgical cases are discussed in the differentials. Although the world’s new direction is toward subspecialties, this is not always the case in radiology. Internal medicine practitioners can refer a patient to a specialist when they feel the case requires it; this is unfortunately not always the case in radiology. Radiology residents may have a request involving an internal medicine case now, and the next case can be a pediatric or a surgical case. This situation of multispecialty diagnosis is faced by so many radiology residents around the world daily. Radiologists can refer the case to a senior, a more experienced, or a specialized radiologist, but again, this is not always the case, especially in hospitals with small radiology departments.

      The author have tried in this book to summarize the diseases that can be in the differential diagnoses or related to a common disease. He have designed the book to mention only the diseases that can be ruled out by history and radiological images, which are the main tools for a radiology resident on duty in a hospital, or without a radiology specialist nearby. Moreover, the differentials are categorized as rare and uncommon diseases. He have specifically chosen these differentials to give the reader more insights and information about rare diseases that can have the same presentation as the disease discussed.
      This modest work will be of assistance to residents and radiologists worldwide and will work as a quick useful tool to revise the most important signs of radiological diseases in a short time.

      Radiology Strategies by Julia Fielding is designed to help health-care providers choose the radiologic test most likely to answer a clinical question. Obviously, no test can replace a careful patient interview and physical examination but radiologic tests have become critical adjuncts for accurate diagnosis of many diseases. For this book, contributing radiologists, all experts in their fields, were asked to choose the most common questions asked of them by their clinical colleagues and recommend the most useful radiologic test or tests.

      Clinical chapters are devoted to a specific organ system. Each is composed of 10 clinical vignettes. Because of their unique attributes, nuclear medicine tests and pediatric diagnosis are discussed in separate chapters. This book can be used in two ways. For specific clinical complaints check the index for a heading such as headache or claudication. The appropriate vignette will give the rationale for and recommend a radiologic test. Two images will be included that demonstrate the abnormality. For some common general complaints, you can review each chapter or refer to the test algorithms.

      A caveat, the recommendations in this book are based on expert opinion gleaned from years of practice and review of published data. They are guidelines only, and the referring physician must ultimately choose the best course of action for diagnosis of each patient.
