The impetus for the development of noninvasive testing methods resulted from the fact that data other than those available by angiography were insufficient to document many aspects of arterial and venous disease. Although progress in the therapy of arterial occlusive disease in the 1950s to the 1970s was rapid, the development of new methods for studying the vascular system lagged far behind. A good deal of the early work was carried out in the research setting, where physiologists began to examine the effects of vascular disease on function. Problems arose when attempts were made to transfer this information and the methods used to obtain it to clinical practice. There was considerable resistance to noninvasive methods because these methods did not seem to modify or improve the way in which patients were diagnosed or treated. As history has shown, this impression was incorrect.
The Fourth Edition of D. Eugene Strandness's Duplex Scanning in Vascular Disorders has been significantly revised by a new team of authors. This book shows readers how to use this technique in evaluating patients with arterial and venous disease. Chapters explain the physiologic principles of duplex scanning and methodically explore each of the major application areas: cerebrovascular, peripheral arterial, peripheral venous, visceral vascular, and specialized applications including assessment of aortic endografts, follow-up of carotid and peripheral artery stents, treatment of pseudoaneurysms, surveillance of infrainguinal bypass grafts, dialysis access procedures, and evaluation prior to coronary artery bypass grafts. Each chapter is authored by a team consisting of an MD and a sonography technologist. The book includes new Doppler scan images.
